Systems engineering and project management is about seeing the forest and not just the trees. No matter how much technical talent you apply to a complex project involving hardware and software, it will not succeed without proper attention to the system and the project. “Baumgarten” means “forest” or “tree garden.” A Baumgarten, then, is a well-managed forest, which is how I see the complex systems I work with.

I have 20 years’ experience in systems engineering and project management. I have successfully managed the design and construction of electro-optical sensors, image processing systems satellite ground processing systems, remote sensing satellites and systems with ground-based, airborne, and space borne segments.

System design is a discipline involving the specification and control of subsystem requirements and interfaces for multiple interlocking pieces that comprise a complex system. I can lead the design of systems involving electronics, optics, mechanisms, computers, networks and software from conceptual phases through acceptance testing and delivery.  System design requires attention to detail and physical insight, as well as facilitating effective communication among a multi-disciplined engineering staff. It requires speaking the customer’s language, as well.

Project management means delivering results on time and within resource constraints (budget and schedule) that meet or exceed system performance requirements. Primarily, it involves working with project staff to optimize their individual contribution to a project and working with customers, as well as senior management, to keep them informed of project status and make sure their requirements are understood and being met.

I hold a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Arizona and a B.A. with honors in physics from the University of Chicago. I worked 18 years at Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colorado. My recent clients include ATK, CAISisco and Microsoft. Letters of reference and a resume are available on request.
